Several of us enjoyed Cardinal Dolan’s current FOX interview, where he described Charlie Kirk as “a modern-day St. Paul.” The Cardinal commended Mr. Kirk’s sentence and readiness to speak about the Lord and for being a version for youths looking for suggesting in their lives.
We regret every death and certainly condemn the murder of Mr. Kirk.
What Cardinal Dolan might not have known is that many of Mr. Kirk’s words were noted by racist, homophobic, transphobic, and anti-immigrant unsupported claims, by violent pro-gun advocacy, and by the promo of Christian nationalism. These prejudicial words do not reflect the qualities of a saint. To compare Mr. Kirk to St. Paul takes the chance of perplexing the true witness of the Gospel and offering unnecessary sanction to words and actions that hurt the very people Jesus calls us to like.
Just recently, Cardinal Dolan joined us in commemorating the 50 th wedding anniversary of the canonization of our Foundress, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton. Elizabeth’s legacy is not one of exclusion or hatred, but of radical welcome, tireless service, and steadfast love of next-door neighbor. Much Of Mr. Kirk’s words stand in raw comparison to the charity and compassion that specified those of Elizabeth Seton.
For generations, the Siblings of Charity of New York have actually cared for immigrant families getting here with nothing but hope. While our straight service has changed, our dedication to those households sustains. They are worthy of real instances of discipleship, not incorrect prophets.
In this minute, we reaffirm our mission: to walk with all people that are inadequate and marginalized, to invite immigrants and evacuees, to protect the self-respect of LGBTQ+ individuals, and to labor for tranquility in a globe saturated with violence. These are the marks of genuine discipleship. These are the high qualities of saints.
We advise our Church leadership, including Cardinal Dolan, to raise witnesses whose lives truly show the Gospel of Jesus Christ– lives of humility, justice, concern, and tranquility.
We will continue to wish Mr. Kirk, his household and for all who grieve his loss.
